Oven Tacos

September 6, 2013 By Susan Nuyt Leave a Comment

I am impressed with this recipe, and the simplicity of it.  It's quick to make.  As much as I adore regular tacos, this one takes the cake for what I want when I'm craving Taco Bell.  I like my tacos this way now.  Try it, you'll know what I mean.~ adapted from MIH Recipe Blog ~Chop 1 onion and add to2 pounds ground beef; brown.  Drain off the liquid. … [Read more...]

Girly Halloween

September 5, 2013 By Susan Nuyt Leave a Comment

These are made from Dollar Store finds-- wigs, eyelashes, glitter skulls and added scary notions except for the silicone wine stopper used for a brooch. Low-cost small cake pans from a flea market makes a sturdy base.  Fasten the skull with duct tape.  Cheap sparkly nail polish can touch up the teeth and anywhere on the face for some highlights.   Feathers give it … [Read more...]

Fried-Baked Chicken Parmesan Verde with Fried Green Tomatoes and Golden Potatoes

September 5, 2013 By Susan Nuyt Leave a Comment

~ Skirt in the Kitchen ~I finally fried my green tomatoes, the large steak-size ones from the garden.  It's taken me all summer getting around to it (unlike me), but it was worth the putting-off period, picking those green tomatoes to fry, the new ones on the vines...After rinsing chicken legs, pat-dry with paper towels, then salt and pepper on all sides.  Coat with … [Read more...]

Frigidaire Baker

September 4, 2013 By Susan Nuyt Leave a Comment

It's my first Frigidaire, so it's a special vintage 'frig for me.  It was purchased without its guts-- the motor and engine.  The door is also off its hinges but with purpose.  I purchased it this way.  The lettering and freezer door is tinted in a pretty green.  The chrome is still a beauty.I like the Frigidaire emblem.  It appears to be a crown … [Read more...]

Pictures in the Kitchen

September 2, 2013 By Susan Nuyt Leave a Comment

It's a kitchen getting renovated with color schemes of grays and yellows, even lemon, accented with charcoal black and white.  Part of the decor is the arrangement of black and white photos on the walls and in open cupboards of classic prints as well as current photos taken of family and loved ones.  It's my room of the house that I absolutely adore again.  It's … [Read more...]

Hibiscus Barbecue for Quesadillas

August 29, 2013 By Susan Nuyt Leave a Comment

~ Skirt in the Kitchen ~This is the first year I've utilized my Hibiscus blooms, put them to wise use, having dried them first.  If you don't have them in your yard, they can be purchased at a health food store, already dried, of course-- but better if you've got them on hand without having to buy.  Make sure they have not been sprayed with any chemicals (a … [Read more...]

Cafe Curtains

August 21, 2013 By Susan Nuyt Leave a Comment

I have a curtain fetish with every season.  I tend to tire of the same curtains so I sew them to save on the cost of purchasing ones that are already made.  They can run pretty expensive in the stores and online for nice ones.  But the adventure of doing something myself, I adore trying my hand at...  These are for my kids' arts and crafts room, so the … [Read more...]

Rose-Colored Glasses (15)

August 7, 2013 By Susan Nuyt Leave a Comment

I've been extremely "busy" this summer, as everyone tends to get during these months.  Of all the summers I've had and spent, this one has been the busiest for me...  my family duties, work obligations, caring for an elder, gardening and hopeful canning along with fruit picking, a food sale here and there once in a while, the house that remains a challenge, this thing called … [Read more...]

Pickled Nectarine Salad and Grilled Steak and Radishes with Black Pepper Butter

August 2, 2013 By Susan Nuyt Leave a Comment

I'm trying to cook in the yard more often, serve and dine outdoors for my husband and kids since it's a sensible thing to do.  After all, summer will soon be at a close.  It also frees up the kitchen for a change-- Less messes, the better.  And there is something about eating outside when the weather is nice that makes it special and memorable for the kids (and … [Read more...]
