I like this idea, doing things homemade instead of buying it each and every time. It’s just a rewarding, satisfying thing to do once in a while.
[Make vanilla sugar, placing 2 whole scraped vanilla beans in a jar of sugar, allowing to set 1 week before first use. But gently shake once a day before opening for the first use.] Put in each jar of 2 jars 1/2 of a vanilla bean along with scraped vanilla of 1 1/2 pods per both.
For 1 jar, heat on medium heat for 5 minutes 1 1/2 cups bourbon. Make sure it’s in a large saucepan to prevent igniting of vapors.
Pour into 1 jar and cool for 30 minutes before tightly sealing.
In the secondary jar, pour 1 1/2 cups heated vodka; cool 30 minutes, seal and store both jars in a cool dark place for 2 weeks before opening. Lightly shake once a day. The purest vanilla flavor is the vodka version.
