Little Crow Nest

Craft and make a little crow nest for fall.  If you’d like to spook it up for Halloween, string some strands from a hot glue gun over the black bird in its nest.  Practically all the supplies needed are from nature’s resources.

Choose an egg shell that is unique in its outer appearance, and gently wash it under a stream of water.  Use a small art brush if need be for the interior.  Turn the eggshell upside-down on a paper towel when air-drying for a day.IMG_2080 little bird nestThis is the cotton my daughter and I collected over summer.  It reminds me of the cotton from the cotton fields in the southern states.  It fell so pretty on the ground, just floated from the limbs of the branches on a slight breeze of air from an old cotton tree near a pond.  My two younger children and I walked all the way around the pond picking dried flowers, branches, and leaves for holiday crafts for in the fall while we enjoyed the outdoors together.IMG_2054 little crow nestA bamboo paper plate liner can be left outside for several days in the rain and cool temperatures to produce a mildew effect, a blackish tint, to make into the base of a bird nest.  Allowing it to dry in the elements of the weather produces the look you want for a Halloween decoration.IMG_2060 little bird nestLine the shallow bamboo with the beauty of autumn-the leaves of brown shades from the trees you enjoyed in the spring and summer when they were green.  They are beautiful in all seasons.IMG_2059 little bird nestTomatillo husks can be added for a filler.  They look like they have veins, what appears to be even a laciness to their dried skins.IMG_2064 little bird nestIMG_2090 little bird nestLay the cotton, next, since it is the lightest.  Just pull out a few sections to make it look like there are birds’ feathers here and there.IMG_2075 little bird nestStabilize the bird and the cotton-filled egg.IMG_2100 little bird nestCraft a baby bird using the “wooden” parts of the cotton seed for its beak.  Take some of the seed specks and place in the cotton for the eyes of the bird.  Spot-glue craft feathers for the sides.
