Pictures in the Kitchen

September 2, 2013 By Susan Nuyt Leave a Comment

It’s a kitchen getting renovated with color schemes of grays and yellows, even lemon, accented with charcoal black and white.  Part of the decor is the arrangement of black and white photos on the walls and in open cupboards of classic prints as well as current photos taken of family and loved ones.  It’s my room of the house that I absolutely adore again.  It’s a Skirt in the Kitchen kitchen, and it tells a story of years baking and cooking that began when I was a child.  Now the story is carried on to my offspring that was started by my own parents and grandparents– and probably by theirs.  Don’t simply keep the pictures hanging in other parts of the house; incorporate them in the kitchen…

{A few of the many photos I’m working on today…  }
These are Dollar Store frames, and they look just as nice as name-brand ones.  They are easily apt to be cleaned, wiped down in case grease splatters or food gets sprayed from a lid too loose on the blender.  Depending on the frame and picture, the print can look better if lay directly onto the mat under the glass rather than under the mat.

This photo was taken on a wintery morning.  The light was coming through the kitchen.  This framed picture now hangs where my vintage Philco refrigerator used to be, shown in the picture.  It no longer is in working condition and is in the making of a meat smoker.

This one is above the stove, my husband cooking chicken and rice soup.

I like the touch of an industrial look and vintage mixed with modern.  The pictures add to the feel of what I’m trying to achieve, my useful kitchen that I’m right at home with.

For the love of baking…

The way my father taught me to hold a long-blade knife for kitchen use when I was a tike is the very way my daughter has learned, and she will continue until she grows into the knife when she is bigger and older.  The theory is not to be afraid of cooking, to learn it well and to love it early because it’s one of the main sources to live by– to feed and give to have and hold dear.  A photo of him carving a turkey is what I’m working on next to complete my new kitchen.

Have a wonderful Labor Day weekend…
