Don Juan Tea Rose

July 25, 2013 By Susan Nuyt Leave a Comment

It's a strong-fragrant rose, ideal for climbing up and over a trellis to compliment a front porch.  Its scent is remarkably beautiful just like its poise and color.  The pictures do not do it justice.  I am partial to this rose for several reasons.  First of all, my father's name was Don; and secondly, I planted it in memory of him, something that means a great deal to me … [Read more...]

Rose-Honey Ham

May 31, 2015 By Susan Nuyt Leave a Comment

It's Rose-Honey Ham from the Don Juan roses of last summer that I put into honey. Cut some good smoked ham into thick steaks. Whisk or beat 1 or 2 eggs. First, dip dry steaks into flour, then into frothy egg, and back into flour to fry in hot oil.  Season with your choice of spice, salt and pepper. Immediately drizzle the rose-honey over the hot fried … [Read more...]

Rose-Colored Glasses (27)

April 23, 2015 By Susan Nuyt Leave a Comment

Rose-Colored Glasses (27), exclusively Skirt in the Kitchen I've waited five years for this lilac bush to bloom.  Not every lilac bush does bloom--ever--whether it is fiction or fact.   … [Read more...]

Rose Hickory Smoked Ham

September 28, 2014 By Susan Nuyt Leave a Comment

exclusively Skirt in the Kitchen (In the photo above, the photo was taken halfway through baking time.  The apples will get much darker and mush up like a really good applesauce.) This Rose Hickory Smoked Ham is true and dear to my heart.  I associate the Don Juan red climbing rose to my late father, purchased my first vine right after his passing two years ago.  His name was … [Read more...]

Rose-Colored Glasses (24)

June 16, 2014 By Susan Nuyt Leave a Comment

It's been some time since I've written on Rose-Colored Glasses.  It's where I stop to smell the roses.  It's the time that it takes to drop everything to really look and live through visible eyes, not solely through a lens... in a walk... or just listening to the sounds of the birds in the trees with eyes closed for a bit.   I admire nature.  I love it's details, its splendor, … [Read more...]

2015 Year in Review

January 24, 2016 By Susan Nuyt Leave a Comment

It's 2015 Year in Review.  I gladly welcome 2016.  There were ups and there were downs, but now there's a bright new beginning--once again--a brand new stinkin' year to roll around in, to turn up heels and plow in...to undo and do over--again. Thank, God, for new beginnings! How was your year, now looking back?...Did it go a little sideways?  You know, it's okay … [Read more...]

Tomato Jam with Cosmos Muffins

September 18, 2014 By Susan Nuyt Leave a Comment

Tomato Jam with Cosmos Muffins, exclusively Skirt in the Kitchen  I cannot imagine summer rolling into fall without tomatoes, and I can't imagine not making a batch of tomato cinnamon jam with Cosmos muffins before it gets October!  It might be the last thing I put off doing, squeezing time for these fruits referred to as vegetables last minute to put up in jars before the … [Read more...]
